iPhone or Android?

October 2, 2017 by Kathy

Over the last two years, most hearing aid manufacturers have come out with Bluetooth enabled hearing devices. The technology has improved accessibility for hearing device wearers. With Bluetooth enabled hearing devices, you can stream calls, audiobooks, and music from you enabled cell phone. If you are an early adaptor of technology, the iPhone is for you. Because Apple uses a single platform, Bluetooth enabled hearing devices will work with iPhones, iPads and some other devices. … [Read more...]

Buying Hearing Aids on EBay

September 3, 2017 by Kathy

What could go wrong? Hearing aids are always listed for sale on EBay. If you are tempted by a “great deal”, think twice. A lot of the newer hearing aids that are being sold on EBay were purchased by the Veteran’s Administration, for VA patients. These hearing aids are registered in the patient’s name and are technically owned by the VA. If you buy these hearing aids, they have no warranty because the warranty is only for the original owner. Additionally, if they need to go in for … [Read more...]

Hearing Device vs Noise Canceling Headphones

August 28, 2017 by Kathy

Why Isn’t Hearing Device Noise Management the Same as Noise Canceling Headphones? I often hear from my patient’s that they still hear background noise with their hearing devices. Wouldn’t it be nice if they worked like noise canceling headphones? There are a few things to keep in mind. Most noise canceling headphones were designed for use on airplanes. The noise on an airplane consists of constant engine noise. The sound rarely changes throughout the flight. If you wear your … [Read more...]

How Can I Prevent Tinnitus?

August 15, 2017 by Kathy

Most people with tinnitus (noise in the ears) have hearing loss. Many people first notice tinnitus after attending a rock concert, loud sporting event or shooting. This is because the noise has overloaded the ears. (Just like too much sun leads to a bad sunburn). Other people develop tinnitus after working around loud noise without any hearing protection. The single best thing you can do to prevent tinnitus is to wear hearing protection when you are exposed to loud noise. It is a good … [Read more...]

Hearing and E-Cigarettes

August 1, 2017 by Kathy

Most people are under the impression that E-cigarettes are safer than traditional cigarettes. As far as hearing is concerned, this isn’t true. There are many chemicals in both E-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes that can lead to hearing loss. Nicotine is oto-toxic. This means that nicotine is toxic to the hair cells within the ear. The hair cells transmit sound to the auditory (hearing) nerve. If they are damaged, you won’t hear well. If you have chemical exposure (E-cigarettes … [Read more...]

Buyer Beware: Hearing Aid Warranties Not Honored

July 16, 2017 by Kathy

It is easy to go online today and order hearing aids. The prices look great, but programming and service are not included in the price of the hearing aids. Most hearing aid manufacturers do not want their products sold online. Hearing aids work best and provide the most benefit when they are fit by an audiologist. To combat this practice, the manufacturers are voiding warranties on hearing aids purchased online. So, your bargain hearing aid is no great deal. Hearing aid repairs … [Read more...]

Hearing Aid Confusion

July 10, 2017 by Kathy

We are bombarded daily with newspaper ads, television ads, and even radio ads, about hearing aids. It is very confusing. How do you know what to believe? If the ads look too good to be true, they are. Reputable audiologists don’t generally talk about discounts and free stuff ( like televisions), when you purchase hearing aids. These are gimmicks to get you in the door, just like that obnoxious car salesman on TV uses. The key to success with hearing aids is an ongoing … [Read more...]

My Hearing Aids Got Wet – Help!

June 23, 2017 by Kathy

At least once a week one of my patients comes in and tells me that they got in the shower with their hearing aids on. It isn’t the problem that it used to be. Most hearing aids are nano coated to prevent moisture damage. So, if you accidentally get into the shower with your hearing aids on, don’t panic. Hop right back out, and there shouldn’t be any damage. Wipe off the hearing aid. Open the battery door and throw out the battery. Let the hearing aid dry out and insert a new … [Read more...]
